"Islands:Welcome" a six layer reduction lino print therefore in an unrepeatable limited edition of 9. Original art, design, execution and concept by Rachel Holborow.
This lino print was inspired by careful observation of winter trees on a misty island in the centre of a lake and queries the validity of foggy concepts such as borders and national identity and ownership of land that have no precedent in the natural world; although it can be dispassionate and brutal, the natural world is abundant generous and welcoming, even in winter - like this island, viewed as we are coming to the shore - wishing and striving for a harbour of safety from conflict and scarcity.
Colours carry seasonal and emotional resonance. The paler pallette of "Island:Welcome" is typical of the dawns of winter - and I use a subtle contrast of hopeful yellows with uncertain purples and blues. The viewer is invited to travel from an unreliable, ever changing, perhaps emotional, watery journey to the relief of land under foot and the possibility of welcome.
